Eating is more than just nourishing oneself
Eating is much more than just filling your plate: it is an act of care, pleasure and connection. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is easy to forget that every meal is an opportunity to savour, share and give thanks. In the Mediterranean diet, eating is a time for coming together: the family gathers, people chat, learn from one another and celebrate the changing seasons.
When we eat mindfully, we are practising mindfulness; it means bringing our mind to the table and becoming aware of what our body feels, what the food offers and what our heart is grateful for.
Eating with presence and gratitude is an act that nourishes not only the body, but also our wellbeing and our relationship with the world around us.
In many homes, the kitchen is the heart of daily life: it is where meals are prepared, food is stored and updates on the day are shared. When we transform this space into a place of togetherness and respect – with the table set, mobile phones put away and time to talk – we are showing that the meal has value. Eating ceases to be merely ‘fuelling’ the body and becomes a moment that structures the day, brings the family closer together and creates memories.
TIP: Before you eat, pause for a moment and ask yourself: am I actually hungry, or do I just fancy a bite to eat? Learning to listen to your body is the first step towards eating freely and in balance.
Eating mindfully means savouring every bite. When we eat slowly, we appreciate the flavours, textures and pleasure of the meal more fully. When we eat quickly, distracted by our mobile phones or the television, our bodies don’t have time to send out the signals that we’re full, and we end up eating more than we need.
Give it a go:
- to put your cutlery down between mouthfuls;
- observe the colour and smell of the food;
- to give thanks before starting the meal;
- chatting to those sitting at the table — that nourishes us too.
Eating is sharing
In the Mediterranean diet, meals are a time for socialising. Eating together strengthens family ties, passes on culture and encourages more balanced choices. At the table, stories, knowledge and traditions are shared; it is a way of looking after one another. What we eat tells our story and that of the place where we live. When we share bread, we also share values: respect, time and presence.
Eating is an act of mindfulness, pleasure and sharing. When you learn to eat with mindfulness, confidence and gratitude, you are cultivating a healthy relationship with food and with yourself. The secret of the Mediterranean diet lies not only in the food itself, but in the way we experience it.

“SWITCH OFF AND SAVOUR”
During a meal this week:
- Switch off your screens (mobile phone, TV, tablet).
- Take in the colours and smells of your meal.
- Have a chat with whoever is sitting at the table with you.
Finally, describe how you felt: Did you eat less? Did you savour your food more?
